Grafton does not leave residents to interpret a number. The Village's website calls its water very hard and says homes here typically need a softener of their own.
On a village connection, the question of whether has about as official an answer as it gets. What remains is sizing the softener for your household and finding its spot on your main line.
Six wells, one rock: the Niagara dolomite
The Village pumps six active deep wells, and all six draw from the Niagara dolomite aquifer. As the Village explains it, the hardness forms on the way through that rock, which dissolves calcium and magnesium into the water.
So the roughly 22 grains is not the luck of one well. It belongs to the aquifer itself, which means it makes little difference which of the six happens to feed your street.
377 parts per million, in grains
The 2025 report gives an average of 377 parts per million. Divide that by 17.1 and you land at about 22 grains per gallon, the same figure the Village states.
On the USGS scale, very hard is anything past 180 milligrams per liter. Grafton's average is more than twice that.
The kind of softener Wisconsin's code calls for
SPS 382.40(8)(j), part of Wisconsin's plumbing code, calls for a demand-initiated softener, one with a meter or a sensor. That is the only kind we supply, in Grafton or anywhere else.
The installation itself goes to a plumbing contractor the State of Wisconsin has licensed, because the softener's drain hookup, air gap and all, is plumbing in the sense of Wis. Stat. ch. 145.
